Creative writing contests

  • How often are the contests

There is currently one contest per month, but there may be more as the site grows. Keep checking contests to see the deadline for the next contest is.

  • What age are the contests targeted at?

At the moment as there is only one contest a month it is open to all ages. Eventually this will be broken down into age groups.

  • If I enter a contest, can I still be asked to critque and judge that competition?

Yes - you will never be asked to critique or judge your own entry - and I only send contest entries for you to critique or judge if you are considered an active member: you have entered one of the previous three competitions.

  • Can I submit more than one entry for each contest?

Yes, you can submit as many entries as you like. You will get 35 points for every entry you submit.

  • Can I submit a contest entry again now I've made changes based on the critique I received?

Yes, this is one of the many benefits of getting the critiques.

  • I'm not from the UK - can I still enter?

Yes, I use Paypal, which accepts international payments. You simply hit the Paypal button as normal and Paypal will convert your payment into the correct currency. If you don't have a Paypal account don't worry, Paypal will ask for your credit card details.

  • How do I make the payment?

Go to Contests and scroll to the bottom. You will see the Paypal form there.

  • I have a rather genius idea for a contest - if you use it will I get credit for it?

Yes. If you are Levels 2 - 4 you will receive £2.50 and 35 points for every contest idea I use. If you are a Level 5 you will receive £3.50 and 35 points. If you have a great idea for a contest and you are a Level 1, I recommend keeping your idea to yourself until you reach Level 2.

  • Can I enter a contest if it was me who came up with the theme?

Yes, I don't see why not!

Levels and Points

  • Where can I find out how many points I have?

Go to The Community and then click on the letter range for your username. Hover over your username and you will be able to see your user card, which shows you what level you are and how many points you have.

  • I can't see my name in The Community, why is this?

If you've just signed up, it may take up to 24 hours for your name to appear in The Community, so don't worry. If you still don't see your name after this time, please email me.

  • If I submit a contest entry or do anything else which will get me points, will I be able to see the change on my used card immediately?

Not necessarily, the changes may take up to 24 hours, so don't worry if you can't see the changes straight away.

  • What happens when I hit the next level?

When you reach Level 3 you will be emailed to ask the maximum number of entries you wish to be sent to critique each month. Please think carefully about this. The stories are up to 1500 words and the critiques need to be about 200. You will get 50p per critique. The amount you receive will also depend on the ratio that month between the number of active Level 3+s we have and the number of entries we receive.

When you reach Level 4 you wll be emailed to ask the maximum number of competition entries you wish to shortlist and critique. Entries to shortlist are sent in groups of 10, so you will receive 10, 20 or 30 etc. Please think carefully if you want to receive more than 10 entries to read. If the number of criques you put down to receive now you are a Level 4 is 5, you will be asked to critique a certain 5 of the 10 entries you have been sent to shortlist. If you say you want to critique 11 a month - you will critique the 10 you have to shortlist and you will be sent an additional entry.

When you reach Level 5 you will be emailed to ask if you want to be sent stories and novels to edit and critique before the members send them to publishers/magazines/third party competititions, and if so how many. You need to spend more time on these, and the critiques need to be at least a page of A4. The pay is much higher though - £2.50 for a story and £10 for a novel.

Other Topics

  • What do you mean by a 'site changing idea'?

An idea for the site, such as a new way of doing things or a new page. If it's viable for me to make the change and I like to idea then I will do it and credit you. If you criticise the way something is done and I decide to make the change, again I will credit you.
